Theme: Climate Action for a Sustainable Future
Host Country: Azerbaijan
World Environment Day is observed every year on 5 June to encourage global awareness and action for environmental protection. In 2026, the event will focus on the urgent need for climate action and sustainable development. Azerbaijan will host the global celebrations in its capital city, Baku, bringing together governments, industries, organizations, and communities to discuss solutions for environmental challenges.
Climate change is one of the biggest threats facing the world today. Increasing greenhouse gas emissions, deforestation, industrial pollution, and excessive use of fossil fuels are causing rising global temperatures, melting glaciers, unpredictable weather, floods, droughts, and loss of biodiversity. These environmental changes directly affect human health, food security, water resources, and economic stability.
The theme “Climate Action for a Sustainable Future” emphasizes the importance of immediate and collective efforts to reduce environmental damage and create a greener planet for future generations. Every individual, workplace, and industry has a role to play in protecting the environment through responsible and sustainable practices.
Major Causes of Climate Change
Burning of fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and gas
Deforestation and loss of green cover
Industrial pollution and carbon emissions
Excessive energy consumption
Poor waste management and plastic pollution
Vehicle emissions and overuse of non-renewable resources
Effects of Climate Change
Rising global temperatures
Extreme heat waves and droughts
Heavy rainfall and flooding
Increase in wildfires and natural disasters
Melting glaciers and rising sea levels
Loss of wildlife and biodiversity
Health problems due to pollution and heat stress
