Eye protection is essential in industries from dust, chemicals, sparks, flying particles, radiation and harmful light. Appropriate eye protection shall be selected as per workplace hazard.

Introduction

Our eyes are one of the most sensitive and valuable parts of the human body. In industrial workplaces, workers can be exposed to flying particles, dust, chemicals, sparks, radiation, molten metal and other hazards that can cause serious or permanent eye damage.

Many eye injuries can be prevented by identifying the hazard, using the right eye protection, and following safe working practices. Eye protection should therefore be considered an essential part of workplace PPE—not something to wear only when an incident is expected.

Common Causes of Eye Injuries in Industry
1. Flying Particles & Chips

Grinding, drilling, cutting, chipping and machining can produce high-speed particles.

Possible injuries:

  • Foreign body entering the eye

  • Corneal scratches

  • Eye irritation

  • Severe eye trauma or vision loss

Suitable protection:
Safety goggles or safety spectacles with appropriate side protection. For high-velocity hazards, use impact-rated eye protection.

2. Dust & Fibers

Activities such as material handling, cement work, insulation work, woodworking and powder handling can generate airborne dust.

Possible injuries:

  • Irritation

  • Redness and watering

  • Corneal abrasion

  • Temporary blurred vision

Suitable protection:
Indirect-vented goggles where dust protection is needed.

3. Chemical Splash

Acids, alkalis, solvents and other hazardous chemicals can splash into the eyes during handling, transfer or maintenance activities.

Possible injuries:

  • Chemical burns

  • Corneal damage

  • Permanent vision impairment

Suitable protection:
Chemical splash goggles; use a face shield in addition to, not as a replacement for, goggles where there is a significant splash hazard.

An accessible emergency eyewash should also be provided where required.

4. Welding, Cutting & Brazing

Welding and cutting can generate intense ultraviolet (UV), infrared (IR) and visible radiation, as well as sparks and hot particles.

Possible injuries:

  • Arc eye / photokeratitis

  • Burns

  • Eye irritation

  • Retinal injury from inappropriate exposure

Suitable protection:
Appropriate welding helmet or welding filter with the correct shade for the operation.

5. Molten Metal & Hot Sparks

Foundries, steel plants, fabrication shops and welding operations can expose workers to molten metal and hot particles.

Possible injuries:

  • Severe burns

  • Corneal damage

  • Permanent vision loss

Suitable protection:
Safety goggles or spectacles plus a suitable face shield, depending on the hazard.

6. High-Pressure Operations

Hydro-testing, compressed-air cleaning, pressure washing and other high-pressure activities can create dangerous projectiles or splashes.

Possible injuries:

  • Penetrating eye injury

  • Chemical or fluid splash

  • Corneal damage

Suitable protection:
Appropriate impact/splash goggles, with a face shield where the risk assessment requires additional protection.

7. Laser & Optical Radiation

Industrial lasers and certain optical equipment can cause serious eye damage even without obvious warning signs.

Possible injuries:

  • Retinal injury

  • Corneal injury

  • Permanent vision loss

Suitable protection:
Laser safety eyewear specifically selected for the laser wavelength and optical density (OD). Ordinary safety glasses are not sufficient.

Selecting the Right Eye Protection

Guarding Eyes against Industrial Hazards :

  1. Flying particles == Safety spectacles with side protection

  2. High velocity particles== Impact rated goggles/spectacles

  3. Dust == Appropriate goggles

  4. Chemical splash ==Chemical splash goggles

  5. Welding ==Welding helmet/filter of correct shade

  6. Grinding ==Impact-rated goggles/spectacles+face shield where required

  7. Molten metel ==Suitable goggles/spectacles +faceshield

  8. UV/IR radiation ==Appropriate filter protection

  9. Laser radiation ==Laser-specific protective eyewear

  10. Large splash/impact hazard ==Goggles+face shield as required

Important: A face shield generally protects the face but should not automatically be considered a substitute for safety glasses or goggles.

Basic Eye Protection Rules for Workers
  1. Wear the correct eye protection before starting the job.

  2. Select PPE according to the hazard and risk assessment.

  3. Ensure safety glasses fit properly and do not obstruct vision.

  4. Keep lenses clean and free from scratches.

  5. Do not use damaged or heavily scratched eye protection.

  6. Do not modify PPE or remove protective components.

  7. Wear goggles for chemical splash and dust hazards where appropriate.

  8. Use the correct welding shade/filter for the operation.

  9. Never look directly at an operating laser or welding arc without appropriate protection.

  10. Use machine guards and engineering controls along with PPE.

  11. Know the location of the emergency eyewash and understand how to use it.

  12. Report eye hazards, damaged PPE and near misses immediately.

What to Do if an Eye Injury Occurs
  1. Do not ignore even a minor eye injury.

  2. Stop the activity and move away from the hazard.

  3. If a chemical enters the eye, immediately flush the eye with clean water using the emergency eyewash and follow the site's emergency procedure.

  4. Seek medical attention promptly for chemical exposure, penetrating injuries, significant impact, burns or vision changes.

  5. Do not rub the injured eye.

  6. Do not try to remove an embedded object yourself.

  7. Report the incident according to workplace procedures.

Eye Safety Is More Than PPE

The best approach is to follow the hierarchy of controls:

Eliminate → Substitute → Engineering Controls → Administrative Controls → PPE

Examples include:

  1. Machine guards around grinding and cutting equipment

  2. Enclosed chemical transfer systems

  3. Local exhaust ventilation for dust/fumes

  4. Proper operating procedures

  5. Training and supervision

  6. Good housekeeping

  7. Correct selection and use of eye protection

PPE is an important last line of defense, but it should work together with other controls.

A few seconds of exposure to a flying particle, chemical splash or intense radiation can cause lifelong damage to vision. The simple habit of wearing the correct eye protection can prevent many serious injuries.
